Overview |

IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
provides greater messaging and application scalability and functionality coupled
with ease of administration. The new features in IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
further reduce the total cost of ownership by leveraging existing investments
in Notes® and Domino and
its applications.
New features:
Simplified identity management through Shared Logon and ID Vault. Shared
Logon provides a secure way of accessing Notes and Domino applications while maintaining
only a single password. The new ID Vault feature allows administrators to
securely automate tasks such as recovering lost IDs and password resets, allowing
administrators to focus on other important tasks.
Reduce storage costs using the new Domino Attachment and Object Service
(DAOS). DAOS reduces redundant storage of attachments and I/O use, resulting
in significantly reduced storage costs, backup efforts, and optimized workflow
operations.
Improved quality of service features, such as Domino Configuration Tuner and dynamic
group, policies provide administrators the ability to detect misconfigurations
before problems arise and maintain consistent policies as members of organizations
change.
Create better looking Web 2.0 applications. The Eclipse based Domino Designer
provides a flexible and integrated framework for application development.
The new XPages design element feature provides application developers an efficient
way to easily update information across multiple applications, saving time
and money.
Calendar federation and flexibility allows end users the ability to incorporate
public calendars (such as Google calendars) and view their complete schedule.
Expanded platform support provides additional options for users who want
the flexibility to choose the operating system and hardware that fits their
needs in terms of factors such as cost, organizational expertise, physical
size, scalability, and energy consumption.
Lotus
Enterprise Integrator® adds support for MySQL database, enhanced control
for replication activities, and 64-bit editions for AIX® which improves the efficiency of data
transfer between systems.
IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
provides administrators, designers, and end users with the secure framework
and infrastructure they've come to depend on while reducing the cost of ownership
and increasing the tools and flexibility available to them. Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
continues to offer integrated features such as Lotus® Sametime® instant messaging and office
productivity tools via Lotus Symphony, providing a complete set of readily
available solutions for businesses.
New in IBM Lotus
Notes Traveler 8.5 are security-rich features such as encrypted mail
support, and remote security management (including multi-level wipe, local
device lock, and policy compliance monitoring). This release also includes
improved text formatting support with the ability to view rich text e-mail
on Microsoft® Windows® Mobile
6 devices.
IBM Lotus
Notes Traveler adds client support for the Nokia S60 platform (third
edition, or later) that builds on the existing Microsoft Windows Mobile support.
Lotus
Notes Traveler continues to provide real-time wireless delivery of the
following Lotus Domino data
with no additional server or third-party solution required:

for its customers, IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5 provides businesses with the
flexibility and tools needed to communicate and collaborate. IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
incorporates additional features that businesses have asked for to ensure
that you can maximize your value while decreasing operation costs. You have
requested greater application development capabilities, ways to reduce storage
costs, improved quality of service, ease of administration, and greater functionality
and flexibility for client activities such as calendaring. We listened. Using
an extensive design partner program to actively solicit feedback both prior
to the planning process and during the development process, IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
provides features that you have requested.
IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino understands
that business needs vary by organization and industry, and that a one size
infrastructure doesn't fit all. Holding strong to our customer value commitment, IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino customers
can choose the operating system and hardware that fits their needs based on
factors such as cost, organizational expertise, physical size, scalability,
and energy consumption. IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5 expands platform capabilities
with the addition of support for platforms such as AIX 64 bit, Windows 2008 64 bit, Citrix 64 bit,
Ubuntu 8.0.4, and Macintosh OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Further, the deployment of Notes and Domino can
accommodate business requirements such as physical location and high availability.
Administrators, managers, and end users can take advantage of the flexibility
while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with the Notes and Domino security model. IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
expands security capabilities through new features such as ID Vault and Shared
Logon. The new ID Vault feature allows administrators to securely automate
tasks such as recovering lost IDs and password resets, allowing administrators
to focus on other important tasks. Shared Logon provides a secure way of accessing Notes and Domino applications
while maintaining only a single password that end users are familiar with,
the Windows password.
IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
reduces the cost of ownership through new features and functionality such
as Domino Attachment
and Object Service (DAOS), further optimization of information handling (I/O),
and streamlined administrative based tasks such as Schedule and Design.
DAOS provides a way to reduce redundancy of stored information, resulting
in reduced storage costs, backup efforts, and optimized workflow operations.
This service allows organizations to store only one instance of an attachment
as opposed to having multiple copies stored and written to disk. For an example,
when a large attachment such as a spreadsheet is sent via e-mail to many recipients, Domino can
be configured to store only one copy of the spreadsheet. This can result in
significant disk space savings, and is further compounded for cases when an
individual performs a "reply to all", and the spreadsheet is resent, as DAOS
will utilize the already stored version. Of course, if the spreadsheet or
attachment is modified, DAOS will store the newly modified copy as a separate
version. The service is transparent to users and applications.
New quality of service features available in IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
include Domino Configuration
Tuner (may change to Domino Configuration Advisor) and Dynamic group policies.
Domino Configuration
Tuner is a utility that provides administrators the ability to detect misconfigurations
before problems arise. Common use cases may be for mistaken configuration
settings, and for best practice information. Domino Configuration Tuner allows administrators
to detect possible configuration problems before the problems become costly
in an organization.
Dynamic group policies allow administration to maintain consistent policies
as members of organizations change, allowing administrators to focus on other
value added tasks.
IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
continues to offer new functionality and features while maintaining the investment
that you make in Notes and Domino. Notes and Domino applications, written in prior
releases of Notes and Domino,
continue to function and provide value, allowing you to realize the value
of investing in Notes and Domino.
To further leverage the investment and increase the value proposition, Notes and Domino 8.5
builds on existing capabilities to allow greater flexibility with application
development. Some of the new application development features in IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
are:

based on Eclipse
- Support for Dojo
Lotus Domino Designer
8.5 not only provides significant enhancements to the way developers build
applications today but also delivers powerful new capabilities for building
Web 2.0 applications. It all starts with basing Domino Designer on Eclipse. Similar to
what basing Lotus
Notes 8 on Eclipse did for end users, developers will benefit from usability
and productivity enhancements that make their job easier than ever. Domino Designer
8.5 is able to leverage various Eclipse features like working sets, search
and compare, as well as editors for HTML, XML, cascading style sheets (CSS),
and JavaScript™.
For Web developers, Domino Designer 8.5 introduces a new design element
called an XPage, which revolutionizes the way Domino Web applications are built. It
allows existing Domino developers
to put a modern interface on their existing applications or allows Web developers
with HTML, XML, CSS, and JavaScript skills to build applications
for the Lotus Domino platform.
Themes provide developers a means to quickly change the look and feel of their
Web application allowing them to tailor application instances for a particular
audience.
For the Notes client, IBM Lotus
Notes 8.5 offers new enhancements such as:
- Calendar federation
- Roaming user enhancements
- Viewers for Microsoft Office 2007
- Usability enhancements such as new drag and drop capabilities
These features provide functionality that customers have requested, such
as the ability to view Notes calendar entries along with personal and public
calendars, such as Google calendars. To allow for maximum flexibility, calendar
availability can be online or offline, allowing individuals the capability
to view their entire schedule of events while disconnected.
IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
is for businesses that desire top line growth through innovation and productivity
solutions. IBM Lotus
Notes and Domino 8.5
provides high quality messaging and application solutions that can evolve
as business needs change, providing the necessary flexibility to change as
business needs dictate. With integrated features such as Lotus Sametime and Lotus Symphony,
organizations have a complete messaging and application system, without having
to purchase office productivity tools. As part of the IBM Lotus software offering, IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5
offers the ability to integrate with other IBM offerings such as Lotus Quickr™ and Lotus Connections.
IBM Lotus Enterprise Integrator 8.5 allows businesses to leverage investments
they have made in disparate systems by allowing them to integrate data and
services between applications. Release 8.5 adds the ability integrate data
from MySQL into Lotus Notes applications or into any of the other systems
supported such as SAP. There are a number of other enhancements including
the ability to run a 64-bit edition of Lotus Enterprise Integrator on AIX
which improves the efficiency of data transfer between systems.

Browser support notes
- Attempting to access Domino Web Access through unsupported browsers results
in the display of an unsupported browser notice. Netscape 4.x users may see
hangs and/or crashes when encountering the Lotus iNotes unsupported browser page. If you
are a Netscape 4.x user and you encounter these problems, you should open
your mail file using the WebMail UI directly through the &ui=webmail switch.
This is documented in the topic "Switching to WebMail" in the Lotus iNotes help.
- Lotus iNotes will
not work if JavaScript is disabled or if session cookies are
disabled.
